ASSIGNMENT #1: Multimedia News Gathering and Reporting
By Irfan Essa | January 3, 2008
- Assigned: 1/8/2008
- Due: 1/29/2008, 1pm.
For this assignment you’ll be on the ground collecting and reporting multimedia information on a newsworthy story of your choosing. This might include integrated elements such as text, audio, video, photos, slideshows, panoramas, interactive infographics, maps, interviews or anything else you can think of. Get creative! You should select a story that is personally interesting and for which you will be able to gain access to the necessary people/places to do the report. This could be an on campus story, or something relevant to the greater Atlanta community. Please exercise better judgment and don’t get yourself in trouble or put yourself in danger in the process.
You’ll do this in pairs, so you should post your interests / background on the wiki (https://t-square.gatech.edu/portal/ - look for the link to the wiki on the left) and find a partner to work with as soon as possible.
Here are some ideas for getting you going:
- Brainstorm a concept for your story: What do you think the consumers of the story will be interested in knowing and how can you present that in a meaningful way? What types of media will you need to collect to tell the story? What medium will be most effective? How will you provide balanced perspectives on the story? What will be the textual component of the story?
- Gathering: Grab your digital (video) camera and/or voice recorder. Schedule interviews if needed. Capture more rather than less: you can edit later, but it’s much harder to go back and collect more.
- Presentation: How might you present the media you’ve collected in different ways? What presentation style will be of most value to the consumer? What’s the story you want to highlight?

- A one page reflection paper on the experience: Now that you’ve been through the experience of “citizen” journalism, how might you support that behavior through the design of new technology and tools that are available for multimedia reporting? What were the easiest / hardest parts of the assignment?
- Go to T-Square (https://t-square.gatech.edu/portal) and login using your GT account. Under assignments you will be able to submit your one page paper and a link to your project.
